At one time, conservatives were men like Buckley: well-read, thoughtful, respectful, snarky in a collegial way. Now they're like Karl Rove: devious, brutal and arrogant.
Real conservatism lost its voice when GHWB lost the election to Clinton. Buckley's voice was silenced with it. I always loved to watch the man pontificate, eyes bulging and eyebrows showing their independence of movement. He made Liberals refine their arguments and occasionally see their errors.
Meh. I always thought he was a self-important hypocritical windbag. A CLEVER self-important hypocritical windbag, but a self-important hypocritical windbag nevertheless.
