I wonder, if I made some joke about Rose Mary Woods, how many of you would I send scrambling to Wikipedia?

Rose Mary Woods filing the Padilla interrogation video

Recently our executive branch decided, at the last possible moment before having the Supreme Court decide it for them, that you cannot just snatch American citizens off the street and hold them in a military jail indefinitely, without charging them, no matter what they may have done, and no matter how important the official who would prefer it otherwise.

It's an important idea to uphold, the whole fair-trial-and-no-torture-allowed thing, no matter what you may think of Jose Padilla personally.

scum

Ah, but did torture take place? Padilla says yes, the government says no, and the secret video made of his "interrogation" has been misplaced by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Yes, "misplaced."

As in they lost it. Can't find it anywhere. Just can't seem to put their finger on where it could be.

And yes, they tried retracing their steps, because they had it last week, right before the thing, and then they went to the dry cleaners, and they may have left it in their pants pocket, or maybe it got mixed in with those old videotapes of the The Rifleman that they donated to Goodwill...

But don't worry, Jose Padilla's defense team. It'll turn up. Probably in the last place we look!

The pic gives it away for me. The name by itself would have sent me to wikipedia.

Now why would you want us to date ourselves? Did you go to Nixon's favorite high school?

Snort. Reading up on the pharmocological properties of DMSO, that's boring. But making a 34-year old reference to implausible government "incompetence," that blasts you out of bed in the morning.

I see how your little style council works...

ooo, oooo, I know! Pick me! Pick me!

As I look at her picture I'm wondering if Clinton might have had better control of himself if he had an old school teacher looking secretary to keep him in line.

OTH, Rosey *was* pretty flexible....

I remembered her. My father was an avid Nixon-Hater and everyone who lived in and grew up in our household can remember hers and many other Watergate-related names-- Archibald Cox, Sen. Sam Irvin, Haldeman, Dean, Atty. Gen John Mitchell, Martha Mitchell

I hadn't yet seen the thing about the Padilla evidence, but yes, good analogy.

Phil: The picture gave it away? That's pretty awesome in itself.

DancingB: I would NOT recommend that you date yourself, unless you're a really great date.

Skye: I know you don't scramble, baby. I'm sure you're very dignified when you Google references from your elders.

Michael: Chemistry is boring, M. JUST EVERYONE knows that, is all.

AnonB: Poor Rose Mary. Forced by the craven Nixon administration to sacrifice her tightly-held secretarial dignity on the altar of Watergate.

And Betty Currie, Clinton's secretary, was not exactly what you'd call a looker. Nor was she a pushover. But she clearly was no match for Bill's powerful fuckability.

JohnnyY: Have you gone back and watched "All the President's Men" recently? It's quite the memory exercise. I never realized how much exposition they don't give because their audience at the time already knew so much of the story.

I was about to go on a rant about how we must protect out liberties by guaranteeing protection for all defendants. In part because I slid over the reference to Rosemmary Woods, not needing a picture to remind me. Proving that age and good memory have its benefits.

Which gets me to my point. Are we so beat down by the criminal behaviour of this administration that adding coal to the fire to the main issue here seems pointless?
