Are all religious conservative homosexual-rights-opposing Republican legislators secretly cruising for anonymous gay sex in public restrooms? Or does it just seem that way?
Senator Larry Craig of Idaho has pled guilty to lewd conduct charges after being arrested in an airport restroom by an undercover officer after Craig engaged in a mating ritual not unlike that of Florida State Representative Bob Allen’s, who was arrested earlier this month under similar circumstances.
Allen claimed that he was forced into offering oral sex because he feared that the black men in the public park restroom might harm him if he did not.
With that excuse taken, Senator Craig has merely offered that his actions were “misconstrued,” and that he should not have pled guilty. He further lamented that, even though he is a United States Senator, presumably familiar with the U.S. Constitution and other legal-type documents, he did not think to consult with an attorney before pleading guilty to the charge, even though he entered his plea two months after the event for which he was arrested.
I mean, is anyone buying this? Seriously, what is that point of offering up such lame and unlikely excuses? But, I guess when you’re a religious conservative homosexual-rights-opposing Republican legislator who secretly cruises for anonymous gay sex in public restrooms, lame and unlikely excuses are pretty much your stock in trade, huh?

I think the point is that right wing voters will happily vote for a candidate who they think is really, really stupid, but not for one who they think might like gay sex.
He could defend his actions by saying he wore a condom as everyone should when having anonamous sex in toilet stalls. Maybe that would show he is not gay because he is just trying to educate people on the dangers of AIDS.
To make an over simplication, Republicans don't believe in transparency as much as Democrats because they have more secrets to hide.
I was hoping you would blog on this because I knew you would do it so much better than I could!
Nice Vikki. Spot on!
Wow - again.
Sometimes silence is golden. I mean, wouldn't you rather not say anything than say something so incredibly stupid?
Maybe they know their conservative constituents are not listening. You know, the way people can pretend to be awake in church, but are just sleeping with their eyes open?
Geeze.
Craig has also offered up the stunning explanation that it's the media's fault, specifically the Idaho Statesman newspaper. It's because of their relentless pursuit of him that he decided to plead guilty (to a crime he supposedly didn't commit, mind you) so that he could ostensibly take a lesser charge and make it go away quicker. Sounds logical enough to me.
The one think I know about religious conservative, homosexual-rights-opposing Republicans is that they lack the capacity for rational thought. That pretty much explains it for me.
I'm inclined to dwell on the sheer desperation of such a defense. A la Randy Cunningham, you pretty much have to shove the facts 3-4" up their nasal cavities before they finally break down and face the truth.
There are enough examples in the right of assholes who are never made to face themselves (coughhastertcough) or are simply so evil there is nothing to face (hacklotthack). I am sure from Craig's perspective, he'd be stupid not to try.
They're just lonely men who like to meet people!
Olbermann played the full news conference. At the start Craig thanked everyone "for coming out today." Amazingly funny.
Mmmmm, my favorite is the "what do you think of that" after showing the cop his senator ID.
He's NOT GAY! Just like Nixon wasn't a crook. Great photo find, by the way.
