At least he didn't say we have "the box office of Troy"

In his “state of the state” speech last night, the Governator said that California is “the modern equivalent of the ancient city-states of Athens and Sparta. California has the ideas of Athens and the power of Sparta.”

If by the “ideas of Athens,” he means that our culture is homoerotic and based on the worship of young men, and that women are prisoners to misogynistic ideas of beauty and hedonism, and if by the “power of Sparta,” he means that we are ruled by two omnipotent kings, and that our standards are so merciless that sickly babies are left on the hillsides to die, then well, yeah, I got no argument with that.

it was Sparta that viewed women so lowly and were only used to sire children, whilst the men were all off being batty boys down at thelocal barracks. Athens was quite advanced in womens rights for the time.

what i really think he was getting at though, was Sparta's (ie. California's) reliance on slaves (mexicans) to do all the shit jobs that no full blooded spartan wanted to do.

Whoa there, Kiki! Spartan kill your mother?

Athens was for shit. Women in Athens were hardly ever allowed out of the house, and they were not educated, which Spartan women were. Spartan women had more responsibilities - they were expected to be as physically fit as men, and might be called upon to defend the homestead in his absence, but they were also able to own property and even divorce their husbands in certain circumstances. The women of Athens had none of those rights.

Oh, and plenty of slaves in BOTH places, so no shortage of immigrant metaphors available for either, okay?

wasn't there a woman in the athenian senate once?

and sparta relied a lot more on slaves than athens did. it was the main reason for their downfall.

spartan women were so athletic so that they could have healthier and more children

Okay, yes, but you've neglected to take into account that the central thrust of thesis is, ah, to be funny.
