Tom DeLay does understand that the Colbert Report is satire, right?

Well, you explain it, then.

Maybe they just don't understand satire? Wouldn't surprise me in the least bit.

DeLay and his defenders understand what satire is, they just hate it. But while Colbert may love satire, I'm starting to wonder if he still understands what it is. I've now seen 3 segments where he plays this haranguing, automatic-gainsaying role to the edge of not-really-that-funny. I don't see the fun in forcing guests to fumble their words; that Colbert is doing it instead of Limbaugh or O'Reilly makes it clear there's supposed to be a joke, but I don't think it's a self-evident one.
It seems the joke is on anyone who doesn't already get Colbert, not just tunnel-vision conservatives.

The extent to which the guest is willing to go off script and play with Colbert in the interview is usually the measure of the interview's funniness, I think.

Greenwald would not play, and I wonder sometimes why guests like that go on the Report.

Oh yeah, I forgot, they're selling something.

But regardless, I still believe there's a world of difference between Colbert haranguing a guest and O'Reilly. I guess context is everything -- or, as they say in real estate: location, location, location.
