That's ludicrous. Did Vargas think to even include interviews from either Chasity Pasley or Kristin Price - the defendents' girlfriends at the time of the murder who tried to help them cover it up?!
Well, the Vargas interview was talked about quite a bit after it aired. You could dispute, I suppose, the author's characterization of it in some places, but for me what was so outrageous about it was the credulous tone Vargas adopted toward the killers' latest attempt to offer a non-gay-related motivation for the crime.
But hey, she's just trying to sell copy, and is willing to sacrifice the truth in order to do so. Nothing unusual about that.
