The Rather/CBS chilling effect?

As Salon astutely points out, the NYTimes is being very vague about the "year" that their story on domestic spying was delayed at the request of the White House.

Did the story, and the WH request to squelch it, occur prior to the 2004 presidential election?

It's a good question. The NYT is referring it to "corporate PR."

What the fuck is going on? First the House approves health care and social welfare budget cuts THEN they approve legislation to make sure all americans have access to digital television by 2009. We're talking 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS so that people have access to digital television.

Now, I'm all for digital television. I personally don't yet subscribe to HiDef yet because I don't want to shell out the big bucks for a new HD Tivo. I loves the TV. Shows like Nip/Tuck and Battlestar Galactica are usually 100 times better than any movie out there.

But, come ON! Let's put things into perspective. Health care programs vs. having a clear picture on your set. Hmmmmmm....

Seriously!

Sorry, just had to vent and this seemed like the place to do it.

The digital tv fix is so in, and has been for years.

Not only is the fed govt. spending our money on this, but the change will require everyone to either buy a new tv, or buy a converter box.

WTF!!!!!

I'm gonna take a wild guess that some well-connected someone is making a few bucks offa this?

BTW, Harry Shearer does brilliant rants on this topic on his KCRW show, Le Show. You can stream them or do the pod thing from kcrw.org.
