Okay, you know I'm not one of those human-interest freaks, but...

...check out the video on this story:

NEW YORK -- A mother trapped in a burning third-floor apartment prayed and then dropped her 1-month-old son out a window to the crowd below. The infant was caught safely by a man who plays catcher for his employer's baseball team.

The rescuer gave the baby mouth-to-mouth resuscitation -- a skill he picked up two decades ago as a teenage lifeguard -- and the mother was rescued by firefighters. Both were treated at a hopsital and released.

I saw that in the news... it was horrific. I thought the baby's head was gonna snap off his body... unbelievable them litt'l creatures are so maleable at that early stage. The mom... not so sure about her instict to protect her young.

Nothing can describe being close to a raging fire. It's enough to make you jump out a window rather than feel your skin blister away from your body or to choke on the superheated air and ash that burns the tissue in your lungs. The survival instinct is to get away, a fall is only death in theory compared to the certain death of an inferno I wasn't there but I can believe that a mother would believe that dropping a child to be the best thing. I cannot imagine how horrible life became during those moments.
