Lou Rawls died today of cancer in Los Angeles. He was 72.

Ow. Another utterly American voice now gone. That opening phrase stills fill my inner ear at idle moments, even though I have not heard the song for years.
The man's voice, phrasing, his profound gift of performing from the heart...he was a singer I felt as much as heard.
In my perfect world his passing would garner as much attention as Johnny Cash or Richard Pryor, not because he was larger-than-life but because the impression he left was unique, genuine, laid down like mineral in growing bones.
