Thanks for the link Vikki, it is a very nice tribute. Way back when I was in the Navy in 1975, women were not allowed to serve on ships unless it was a support ship of some kind, never on a combatant. There was talk of trying out an all female crew on one of the new Spruance class destroyers, but it never happened.
I think the brass was nervous that an all female crew would have performed better than their male counterparts, and didn't want to risk it.
I have to say I'm surprised that there hasn't been more fuss over this. I always thought that when military women were finally in a position that they would suffer significant combat casulties, that there would be a huge media examiniation of it, and some kind of conservative outcry.
